Silent Killer Returns: EEE Claims Life in New York, Governor Declares Health Emergency![]() | Are you prepared for the unexpected threat lurking in your backyard? New York faces its first Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) fatality since 2015, prompting Governor Hochul to declare an Imminent Threat to Public Health. This rare but deadly mosquito-borne illness has surfaced in 15 counties, catching health officials off guard. With no human vaccine available and a staggering mortality rate, state agencies are mobilizing to protect residents. But as fall settles in, are we doing enough to safeguard our communities from this invisible enemy? Steps to reduce the risk of EEE infection: 1. Use EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. 2. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito hours. 3. Avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. 4. Eliminate standing water around your property where mosquitoes breed. 5. Ensure window and door screens are in good repair to keep mosquitoes out. 6. Consider using mosquito netting when camping or sleeping outdoors. 7. Stay informed about EEE activity in your area through local health department updates. 8. Limit time spent in wooded, swampy areas where mosquitoes thrive. 9. Use air conditioning when possible to reduce the need for open windows. 10. If you must be outside during peak hours, consider treating clothes with permethrin. |
